What the programme is
A residential research fellowship, called “membership”, at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Members have no teaching duties; they spend one or two terms working on their own research project alongside other scholars. The School of Historical Studies covers ancient, medieval, early modern and modern history, art history, East Asian studies, history of science and, relevant to many of our readers, Near Eastern and Islamic Studies.
Who can apply
IAS invites “qualified candidates of any nationality”. You need a PhD awarded by 31 July 2026 and a publication record: the application asks for three peer-reviewed writing samples. It suits Arab historians, Islamicists and art historians based in the region or abroad who have a defined book or article project.
What you get
Funding of up to $40,000 for one term or up to $80,000 for the full year, limited travel reimbursement, offices, libraries, and subsidised dining and housing. Members must live at the Institute or close to Princeton during their stay. The page does not mention visa arrangements, so ask IAS if you need a US visa.
How to apply
Submit through the IAS online portal: CV, a proposal of up to 1,500 words, a one-page bibliography, three writing samples and, for PhDs from 2020 onward, two reference letters.
Timing & verification note
Checked on ias.edu on 27 September 2026. The deadline is 15 October 2026; no time zone is given, so submit early.
